Whirlpool has used the spring-clip retainer system for years now on their top load washers. However on the WTW 8127 LW0, there's a dip in the top just ahead of the console, and the glass lid makes getting the putty knife in from the front. The spring-loaded hinge cartridges make access from underneath (thru the lid opening) problematic as well.

Inserting the blade (1"- 1'1/2" wide) from the side, under the plastic edge, as far forward as possible, and then sliding it back towards the back of the machine is much easier than trying to get around the lid and into the recess from the front.
